The Archaeological Research Institute is accepting resumes for the Director of Public Archaeology position with a focus in Archaeological Project Management. This position serves as the Principal Investigator to oversee public facing archaeological projects and programs for the Archaeological Research Institute. This position is an opportunity for a highly motivated, skilled archaeology educator to expand and grow the public’s understanding and experience with regional archaeology. This individual will be relied on to have the ability and foresight to build the annual project workload for the organization, under the direction of the Archaeological Research & Preservation Committee & the Executive Director. The Director of Archaeology is responsible for initiating, developing, and directing original research projects and community-based archaeology work that advances the understanding of the history and interests of descendant communities and native cultures.
Key components of the position:
- Ability to meet the requirements for and acts as Principal Investigator, as qualified under the Federal Secretary of the Interior standards and Indiana state qualifications, for archaeological documentation, research, lab analysis, and the production of professional reports in compliance with state and federal laws, including IC 14-21-1, Section 106 of the NHPA, Section 4(f) of the DOT Act, and NEPA.

- The open position consists of managing midwestern archaeological projects, both pre-contact & historic. Expertise in the pre-contact archaeology of the mid-continental U.S. is preferred, as is experience with tribal consultation and passion for public archaeology is a must.
- Archaeological survey and excavation, technical writing, computer proficiency, and problem-solving skills are crucial for this position.
- The applicant should also demonstrate the ability to work both independently and collaboratively and meet deadlines.
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to carry out research to completion.
- The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
- Must be able to hike long distances over rugged terrain. Requires working outdoors in all types of weather, as well as occasional overnight travel.
- The Director of Archaeology is also expected to actively participate in raising funds to support organization archaeological research, caretaking, and curation; publish significant original scholarly works; and collaborate in the organization’s public programs through lectures, workshops, and exhibit planning and development.
- Leads, collaborates and/or participates in community-based archaeology work to further the interests of descendant community cultures, and strengthens relationships between the organization and community partners.
- High level of proficiency in ArcGIS and some knowledge of geophysics and use of related software desirable.
- Ability to perform in a professional manner and maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of the organization mission, programs, and administrative policies.
- Ph.D. or equivalent knowledge in Anthropology with a specialization in archaeology preferred. The successful candidate must have a master’s degree in Archaeology, or in Anthropology with a focus in Archaeology.
- Must have a minimum five (5) years of experience leading archaeological projects
- Must have a minimum of ten (10) years of experience in North American archaeology leading archaeological projects, conducting research, writing technical reports, and developing other Section 106 deliverables.
- Must have experience as a Field Director, Field Supervisor, Crew Chief, or other similar role that oversaw individuals in the field.
- Must have experience and familiarity in one or more of the following states: Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, or Illinois.
- Must understand above ground historic properties.
- Must also possess a current valid driver’s license
Duties and Responsibilities
35% Research, Field & Lab Work
- Conducts original research that advances the understanding of the history of the region and native cultures through field and collections-based archaeological research and related activities.
- Designs, initiates, and coordinates field research programs and collections-based research initiatives related to archaeology programs.
- Must be able to analyze results from the field, artifact analyses, literature reviews, historic document research, and other sources of information to be able to develop findings and interpretations regarding archaeological resources.
- Supervises others engaged in professional and technical activities and serves as affiliate faculty advisor to graduate level students working with organization collections. May supervise others engaged in professional and technical activities.
- May entail participation on field trips for the purpose of surveying, sampling, collecting, and general research activities to locations that may be remote from medical facilities and other urban infrastructure, and may involve activities such as hiking, camping, climbing, rope work (such as rappelling and use of rope bridges), transport via helicopter and other small aircraft, and other similar activities necessary to fulfill the objectives of the associated research activities.
- Process and conduct analyses on pre-contact and historic period artifacts.

- Plan, develop, and oversee Phase I, II, and III archaeological investigations; author and develop technical reports; develop and complete a variety of other Section 106 deliverables; all of which will likely be conducted on an assortment of different subsurface cultural resources in different regions.
- Maintains a high level of publication productivity in original scholarly works related to the broad scientific community.

- Oversee the ARI’s Publicly Engaged Archaeological Field School that is RPA Certified.
- Ensure project compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws and regulations.
- Responsible for the quality assurance and quality control of deliverables to the state agencies and consulting parties, etc.
- Interacts and collaborates within and across departments with staff, affiliates, and volunteers working on research and other organization projects or initiatives
- Coordination with ARI staff, students, volunteers and visitors, agency contacts, teaming partners, consulting parties on select projects, and other interest groups and individuals.
- Coordinate, develop, and implement a variety of standard and/or creative mitigation solutions for projects that require a resolution to adverse effects.
- Develop scopes of work, technical approaches, and cost proposals for new projects.

5% Outreach & Funding
- Actively seeks and obtains financial support through grants, contracts, and other resources to further major research and/or to support major organization programs.
- Maintains affiliations in scholarly and professional organizations through active service (i.e., committees, councils, editorial review boards, funding review panels) and participation (i.e., attendance, panel discussions, etc.), including presentations of significant and major works at regional, national, or international meetings, symposia, and workshops which enhances their development as a scientific professional.

Starting Salary and Benefits:
- Pay: $65,000 – $75,000 per year, depending on experience.
