Junior Group Experiences

Come join ARI archaeologists and explore our local past and learn about archaeology! May through October, you can come out to our local archaeological heritage site and help with excavation and exploration into past cultures. If you’re more interested in an indoor experience, we offer laboratory and experimental archaeology experiences year-round. All junior experiences are open to youth ages 5-11 to help them define what archaeologists do, represent Native Americans as people with a past, and practice stewardship of our historical sites and natural resources.

  • Junior Group Field Experiences
  • Junior Group Lab Experiences

Youth ages 5-11 can enjoy their own excavation at the archaeological site. The experience is tailored so that it will be exciting and rewarding to them.  They learn the same techniques that archaeologists use at the Guard Site with visitors and volunteers (excavation, screening, artifact analysis). This is all done in a setting that was created to encourage learning for both young and older junior archaeologists. The junior experience includes the River of Time presentation, simulated dig experience, sifting, and mapping.

Youth ages 5-11 can experience the work that archaeologists do in the lab. They will begin their experience with a series of fun activities giving background knowledge to archaeology and the Guard Archaeological Site. These activities are a magnetometry activity, a unit mockup to teach context, and a mapping activity. In the second part of the experience, students will get to learn about and contribute to real archaeological analysis by touring an archaeological lab, talking to archaeologists performing research, and washing artifacts. They’ll be working with real archaeological materials that are around 1,000 years old!

ARI recognizes the violence inflicted upon the indigenous Nations of the Ohio Valley, including their forced removal following treaties such as Fort Finney and Greenville. ARI condemns the intentional destruction of their languages and cultures. ARI condemns the continuous discrimination against the living Native peoples throughout the United States.

ARI recognizes that these peoples are not of the past, but are vibrant living nations. ARI recognizes that Native Americans are a diverse, resilient people with a deep enduring history worth knowing.  In that light ARI extends our respect to all Native peoples both past and present.
