ARI Kids: Group Field Experiences

Event Description:

The Junior Group Archaeological field experience at the Archaeological Research Institute is designed specifically for children between the ages of 5 and 11. This program offers an engaging and educational opportunity for young individuals to learn about archaeology in a hands-on and immersive environment.

The program begins with the River of Time presentation, where the junior archaeologists are introduced to the concept of archaeology and its importance in understanding the past. They learn about different archaeological sites, artifacts, and the methods used by archaeologists to uncover and interpret the lives of the people who lived in this region for thousands of years.

After the presentation, the children participate in a simulated dig experience. They are provided with tools such as trowels, brushes, and buckets to excavate a mock archaeological site. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, the young archaeologists learn proper excavation techniques, including how to carefully remove layers of soil and uncover artifacts.

Once the artifacts are uncovered, the children engage in screening, a process where they sift through the excavated soil to separate artifacts from debris. This activity helps them understand how archaeologists separate and identify artifacts in real fieldwork.

Furthermore, the junior archaeologists get to learn about the significance of site mapping. They are taught how to create accurate maps of the excavation area, documenting the location and context of discovered artifacts. This skill helps them understand the spatial relationships between artifacts and how they contribute to reconstructing the past.

The program is designed for groups of at least 12 and can accommodate a maximum of 25 participants. If you have a larger group, you can contact Samy, the Director of Programming, at samy@exploreari.org to discuss customizing the experience to suit your needs.

Overall, the Junior Group Archaeological field experience at the Archaeological Research Institute provides a unique opportunity for young individuals to delve into the world of archaeology, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the past.
