Join us at the Archaeological Research Institute (ARI) for an unforgettable adult group archaeological experience. Designed for individuals aged 12 and up, this fully guided hands-on adventure will immerse you in the world of archaeology and provide an opportunity to actively participate in the field of archaeology.
Your journey begins at the ARI Base Camp located in Lawrenceburg, IN. Upon arrival, a knowledgeable staff member will provide you with an introduction to archaeology, giving you an overview of ARI, sharing information about the organization and its current research questions. This introductory session will prepare you for the exciting activities ahead.
From the Base Camp, you will be transported to the Guard Archaeological Preserve (GAP), where our professional team of archaeologists awaits your arrival. At the GAP, you will be treated to a 15-20 minute talk that delves into the significance of the Guard Site, outlining ARI’s research questions and plans. This briefing will help you understand the historical and archaeological context of the site and its importance.
Once you are fully informed and ready to explore, our team of experts will guide you through a range of activities tailored to provide an authentic archaeological experience. These activities may include surveying and mapping the site, digging and excavating specific areas, utilizing screens to sift through soil for artifacts, and engaging in artifact analysis. The hands-on nature of these tasks will allow you to actively participate in the archaeological process and gain a deeper understanding of the techniques and methods employed by professionals in the field.
To ensure a personalized and focused experience, groups for this program are limited to a minimum of 12 participants and a maximum of 25. Archaeology is often messy and your experience will include walking around the site, so wear clothes you would not mind getting dirty and sturdy shoes such as hiking boots. We suggest you bring a hat, bug spray, sunscreen, snacks, and a reusable water bottle.
