Hands in the Land: Garden Preparation and Seed Starting Info Day
Participants learn best practices for garden preparation, including clearing, fertilizing, planting, and seed starting. First, instructors explain the basic science behind common gardening methods. Then, guests discuss which crops grow best in early spring and which should wait until later in the season. In addition, the program introduces Fort Ancient and Eastern Woodland agricultural and horticultural practices. Where possible, instructors connect modern techniques to what can be reconstructed from Indigenous clearing and planting methods. Finally, participants apply this knowledge during a hands-on learning experience at the Guard Archaeological Preserve.
