Archaeologist Guided Hands-On Experiences In the Field

May through October we open up a local archaeological heritage site for the public to join in the responsible & respectful excavation and exploration into past cultures. ARI’s hands on experiences are open to students of all ages and skill levels that yearn to know and experience more. Join us in exploring our local past, learning about archaeology, understanding the importance of preservation and make your own archaeological discoveries.

Individual / Small Group Hands-On Archaeological Experiences

Guided Archaeological Experiences for Individuals or Small Groups

Join ARI archaeologists for a fully guided hands-on archaeological experience at our excavation site in Lawrenceburg, IN.

Your experience starts at the ARI Base Camp where a staff member will give you an introduction to archaeology and some back information on the organization before you head out to the dig site.

At the Dig site you will be greeted by one of our staff and given a 15-20 min talk about our site, our research plans and background on the village and cultural time period. Then you will be taken on a walking tour of the village site and the ARI gardens, this gives additional background and insight into what life would have been like for the Guard Site villagers 1,000 years ago.

After your walking tour, you are teamed up with our staff archaeologists and you get to work in the excavation. You will be assigned your own dig kit and will help our team excavate, screen and bag artifacts.

How to Prepare:
Wear hiking clothes that can get dirty. Bring plenty of water & snacks. Sunscreen, hats, bug spray, sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended.

Group Hands-On Archaeological Experiences

Groups of 5-15 people (contact us if you have a larger group)

Group experiences are great for scout groups, school field-trips, home school groups and corporate team-building experiences.

The Camp Includes:

– Gardening with Native Cultivates

– Experimental Archaeology projects

The Camp Includes:

– Guided Archaeological Hike at Shawnee Lookout

– Gardening with Native Cultivates

– Experimental Archaeology projects

Junior Field Experience

Kids 11 and under can enjoy their own excavation at the archaeological site. 

They are guaranteed to find artifacts. They will be using the same techniques that our staff archaeologists use in the main unit with visitors and volunteers (excavation, screening, artifact analysis), only in a controlled setting that can prevent damage to the archaeological features. The junior experience includes a nature walk around the archaeological site, talks with staff archaeologists over at the main unit excavation and hands-on work in their Junior Unit. Staff will guide them through the experience, but a parent or guardian must be present.

Includes:
All required equipment, gloves, and learning materials.

Transportation:
No transportation included at this time. Parent or guardian must provide transportation to excavation site. Directions to site will be given to the guardian at the Base Camp at the registered meeting time.
