Adult Lab Experiences

Event Description:

Experience the world of archaeology firsthand at the Archaeological Research Institute (ARI) and get involved in the exciting process of artifact analysis and preservation. The Adult Archaeological Lab Experience at ARI offers participants aged 12 and up a unique opportunity to engage with archaeologists, learn about ongoing research projects, and actively contribute to the preservation and interpretation of historical artifacts.

The experience begins with a brief introduction to archaeology, providing an overview of the field and its significance in understanding the people who have called this region home for thousands of years. ARI archaeologists will present information about regional archaeological sites and culture being studied, giving participants a context for the artifacts they will be working with. The research plan and questions driving the current archaeological investigations will be discussed, offering insight into the goals and objectives of the project.

In the second part of the experience, participants will have the chance to explore the ARI archaeological lab, a dedicated space where researchers analyze and process artifacts recovered from archaeological excavations and surveys. The lab tour will showcase the various tools, techniques, and technologies used in artifact analysis, giving participants a glimpse into the scientific aspects of archaeology.

During the lab experience, participants will also have the opportunity to engage directly with archaeologists conducting research. They can ask questions, seek clarification about specific artifacts or research methodologies, and gain deeper insights into the archaeological process. This interaction with professionals in the lab provides a valuable learning experience and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes into uncovering and interpreting the past.

One of the main activities in the lab will be the cleaning, sorting, weighing, and counting of artifacts. Participants will handle authentic artifacts recovered from historic and pre-contact contexts, ranging from pottery shards and stone tools to personal items and fragments of historic structures. Under the guidance of experienced archaeologists, participants will learn proper techniques for artifact cleaning and preservation, ensuring the long-term integrity of these valuable cultural remains.

Through this hands-on experience, participants will develop a deeper appreciation for the archaeological process and the importance of artifact analysis in reconstructing past cultures. By actively contributing to the preservation and organization of artifacts, participants play a role in safeguarding our collective heritage for future generations.

The Adult Archaeological Lab Experience at the Archaeological Research Institute offers an engaging and educational adventure for those interested in archaeology, history, and cultural preservation. Join us and delve into the fascinating world of archaeology while making a meaningful contribution to the field.
