Exploring History (Ages 9-12)

Event Description:

CAMP REGISTRATION OPENS February 1st!

The Archaeological Research Institute (ARI) offers an exciting and educational Archaeology Camp aimed at students aged 9-12. This camp provides a unique opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in the field of archaeology, develop their skills, and gain insights into the history of the region. The camp is designed to be a blend of engaging activities, and learning experiences.

The camp is based at the ARI’s Base Camp located in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. This serves as the starting point for exploring the rich archaeological heritage of the region. Throughout the camp, students will engage in hands-on educational activities that integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) principles. They will have the privilege of working alongside professional archaeologists both in the field and in the laboratory, gaining valuable insights into the real-world practices of archaeological research.

The program includes daily thematic focuses, with each day highlighting a different aspect of archaeology. In addition to participating in excavations at the Guard Archaeological Preserve and conducting experiments like pottery making and learning to use an atlatl, campers will have the opportunity to explore native plants and hike to locations that exemplify the concept of place.

Throughout the camp, emphasis is placed on the importance of preserving archaeological sites and the valuable information that can be gleaned from excavations and the study of artifacts and features left behind by past cultures. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the scientific principles that underpin archaeology, further fostering their appreciation for this fascinating field of study.

What’s Included:

  • Four full days of guided archaeological experiences at notable locations like the Guard Archaeological Site and the ARI Teaching Lab
  • Camp T-Shirt to commemorate the experience
  • Engaging educational materials and resources

To ensure a quality experience, the camp is limited to only 10 spots per session. If all the spots are filled, a waitlist will be available, and a second session may be opened if the waitlist reaches capacity.

If you’re interested in joining Exploring History Camp and want to secure a spot, be sure to sign up soon!
