Join us at the Archaeological Research Institute for an exciting and educational field trip! We offer a range of field trip options tailored to different age groups and seasons, ensuring an immersive and enriching experience for all participants.
Our field trip activities vary based on the needs of your group but will include techniques and methods in excavation and survey as well as experimental archaeology. All the activities your students will participate in will be guided by our expert public archaeologists.
Your group can explore our simulated excavation at the Smith Site, a historic homestead. Students will learn the essential techniques archaeologists use to research our region’s history. Students may even be able to visit our open research sites and take part in our ongoing research projects!
Experimental Archaeology happens all the time at ARI. This is where we learn to replicate or approximate ancient cultural practices and tasks, testing archaeological hypotheses. Students can try their hand at using an atlatl to throw a seven-foot dart, learn the ancient art of flint knapping to create stone tools, explore indigenous gardening methods and native plants, or even learn the arts of pottery-making and cordage.
We understand that each class has unique learning objectives and state standards to meet. That’s why we offer customized experiences and are open to tailoring the field trip to your specific needs. Our dedicated staff will work closely with you to create a trip that aligns with your class’s goals and ensures a meaningful and engaging experience for your students.

All necessary equipment will be provided for the field trips, but please wear attire that you don’t mind getting dirty, as we will be engaging in activities that can cause clothes to get dirty or stained. It is also appreciated if you wear closed-toed shoes and long pants, as the some activities take place outdoors.

These grants specifically cater to the transportation needs and lunch expenses of students residing in Southeast Indiana, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Ohio. By utilizing these funds, ARI is able to offer field trip experiences on a donation basis, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning about the historical cultures of our region.
