Immerse yourself in the world of experimental archaeology at the Archaeological Research Institute (ARI) and participate in a fully guided hands-on experience designed for individuals aged 12 and up, catering to those who have a keen interest in archaeology and a desire to engage in practical experiments. Located at the ARI Base Camp in Lawrenceburg, IN, this adventure offers a unique opportunity to delve into the past and explore ancient cultures through replicating their tasks and activities.
Upon arrival at the ARI Base Camp, you will be greeted by a knowledgeable staff member who will provide you with an introduction to archaeology and explain the mission of ARI. This introductory session will set the stage for the immersive experience that awaits you.
Experimental archaeology involves generating and testing hypotheses by recreating or approximating the tasks and feats performed by ancient cultures. It utilizes various methods, techniques, analyses, and approaches based on archaeological source material such as ancient structures or artifacts. By engaging in hands-on activities, you will gain insights into how ancient peoples might have lived and accomplished their daily tasks.
Throughout your experience, you will have the opportunity to work with reconstructed artifacts. These reconstructed artifacts serve as valuable tools for understanding not only how they were made but also how they were used. The activities offered at ARI cater to a diverse range of interests and may include atlatl throwing, archery, crafts, bipolar reduction (a technique used in stone tool production), flint knapping (the art of shaping flint), gardening, lab activities, pottery, copperworking, elm bark basket making, and much more.
Under the guidance of experienced archaeologists and instructors, you will have the chance to try your hand at these ancient techniques and gain a deeper appreciation for the skills and ingenuity of past cultures. The hands-on nature of the experience allows you to truly engage with the material culture of ancient peoples and develop a greater understanding of their daily lives.
Whether you are an archaeology enthusiast, a history buff, or simply curious about the past, the adult experimental archaeology experience at the Archaeological Research Institute promises to be an educational and enjoyable adventure. Come and unlock the secrets of the past through immersive exploration and hands-on activities in a supportive and enriching environment.
