Giving Thanks Through Understanding: Honoring the Past, Preserving the Future

At the Archaeological Research Institute (ARI), Thanksgiving is more than a holiday — it’s a moment to reflect on gratitude, connection, and the diverse histories that shape our shared landscape. As we gather with family and friends, we pause to honor the many peoples who have called this region home for thousands of years and whose stories continue to guide our work today.

The lands along the Great Miami River Valley hold evidence of generations who lived, farmed, created, and thrived long before European settlement. Their legacies — found in the artifacts, earthworks, and traditions they left behind — remind us that history is not something buried in the past. It’s a living thread connecting all of us.

This season, we give thanks for:

  • The opportunity to learn from the land, uncovering clues that teach us about the resilience, innovation, and interconnectedness of past cultures.
  • The generosity of our volunteers, members, and partners, who make it possible to protect and share these stories with the public.
  • The enduring presence of Indigenous communities, whose knowledge, stewardship, and traditions enrich our understanding of the past and inspire us to act responsibly in the present.

At ARI, our mission is rooted in respect — for the people who came before us and for the communities we serve today. We believe that understanding history helps us cultivate gratitude not just for what we have, but for the shared responsibility we carry to preserve and honor cultural heritage.

This Thanksgiving, we invite you to take a moment to look beyond the familiar holiday traditions and reflect on the deeper layers of the land beneath your feet — layers filled with stories of ingenuity, cooperation, and endurance.

May this season bring warmth, understanding, and a renewed sense of connection — to one another and to the histories that continue to shape our collective future.

From all of us at the Archaeological Research Institute — thank you for being part of our journey to explore the past and preserve the future.
