Hands on History: Step into Fort Ancient
Join us at the Guard Archaeological Preserve for a hands-on, family-friendly experience celebrating creativity, community, and the foodways of the Fort Ancient people. This special event invites children and adults to explore a variety of make-and-take crafts while sampling Indigenous-inspired foods prepared with simple, traditional ingredients.
Visitors can rotate through several craft stations at their own pace. Kids can roll and decorate colorful paper beads, create bright tissue-paper “fire” flowers, and paint mandala designs on smooth stones using dotting tools. Each activity is designed to be easy, engaging, and fun for a wide range of ages, allowing families to learn and create together.
Alongside the craft activities, guests will enjoy a small tasting menu inspired by foods commonly grown or gathered by Indigenous cultures of the Eastern Woodlands. Sample hearty Three Sisters Stew made with corn, beans, and squash; roasted sunflower seed and nut mix; smoked fish or game jerky; a lightly sweet berry and grape compote; and refreshing maple-infused water or herbal tea. These dishes offer a flavorful introduction to ancestral food traditions and the agricultural heritage of the region.
Whether you’re a parent looking for an enriching outing, a child excited to craft and explore, or a community member interested in local history, this event offers something engaging for everyone. Enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, learn about traditional practices, and take home your handmade creations.
Come spend the day connecting with nature, creativity, and culture at Guard! We will meet at 126 W High St and shuttle out to Guard.
