Environmental Stewardship Internship

Work Hours 

Starting 6/1/25, the internship entails a commitment of 10-15 hours per week, offering a flexible schedule within the organization’s operational hours (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday).

Land Stewardship Coordinator, works with the Land Stewardship Team  (“Stew Crew”) 

Internship Description 

The Environmental Stewardship Internship offers an entry-level opportunity to gain valuable experience in the field of Environmental Conservation with a focus on archaeological site conservation. Interns will closely collaborate with ARI staff, providing interactive learning experiences and on-the-job training.  

Physical Demands:  

Field work involves physical labor, requiring a certain level of fitness, including (but not limited to) working in all weather conditions, stooping, kneeling, crouching, working at a computer station, and walking on uneven terrain.

Age Requirements: Minimum age requirement is 16 years old.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

Interns will receive training and hands-on experience in the following areas and will be expected to perform the following tasks: 

Public interaction/ Education: 

  • Support the creation and delivery of public workshops related to Land Stewardship. 
  • Support the development of educational materials on invasive species, flora and fauna identification, etc., for volunteers and the public.
     

Field Work: 

  • Conduct invasive plant removal. 
  • Install and maintain native plant installations. 
  • Assist with special projects as needed, including construction of Ft Ancient-style dwellings and a palisade wall. 
  • Water plants in front of the office, experimental gardens, community garden, and raised beds. 

Monitor/ Research: 

  • Establish baseline criteria for monitoring in collaboration with the Archaeology team. 
  • Monitor and identify plants with regular Bioblitzes in the field. 
  • Research cultivars of native prairie plants to survive in floodplain and annuals for gardens: vegetables, herbs and native flowers. 

Education, knowledge, and abilities of a strong applicant:  

The ARI Internship welcomes applicants with various levels of experience and education, but a strong candidate should possess some of the following skills: 

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills. 
  • Attention to detail, ability to perform technical work, and accurately record data. 
  • Enthusiasm and a keen interest in local history, the environment, and archaeology.
