Come explore alongside archaeologists as we investigate a local archaeological heritage site. Join us in the responsible and respectful excavation and exploration of past cultures. May through October, we are in the field excavating at a local archaeological site. If you’re more interested in an indoor experience, we offer laboratory and experimental archaeology experiences year-round. Let us help you define what archaeologists do, represent Native Americans as people with a past, and practice stewardship of our historical sites and natural resources.

You could be the first person in 1,000 years to see a design on a piece of pottery, or to see the wear pattern on a stone tool!
How to prepare:
Wear clothes that can get dirty or wet, sturdy close-toed shoes, and do not forget to bring a sweater or sweatshirt- it can get chilly in the lab!

Adult Experimental Experiences
Join ARI for a fully guided hands-on experimental archaeological experience at our excavation site or Base Camp in Lawrenceburg, IN. Your experience starts at the ARI Base Camp where a staff member will give you an introduction to archaeology and some back information on the organization before you begin.
Experimental Archaeology activities vary by day and season. During your experience you will recreate or use a reconstructed artifact. Reconstructions are used to discover how they were made but also how they might have been used. It is hard to prove exactly how an atlatl was supposed to be thrown or how exactly to knap a knife but it is quite easy to tell when you are doing it wrong! Activities vary but include atlatl throwing, archery, crafts, bipolar reduction, flint knapping, gardening, lab activities, pottery, copperworking, elm bark basket making and more.
How to Prepare:
Wear hiking clothes that can get dirty. Bring plenty of water & snacks. Sunscreen, hats, bug spray, sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended.

Adult Immersion Experience
Be an archaeologist for a week! Learn about archaeology through an immersive, hands-on, experience. Each day, campers will learn new skills that archaeologists use in their work, including surveying techniques, excavation, and lab analysis and interpretation of artifacts. There will also be opportunities to experience guided tours of some local archaeological sites. Accommodations are not provided, but recommendations can be given on request.
Our region is filled with human history… over 15,000 years of human history and this camp is your ticket to exploring local history and archaeology with a team of professional archaeologists.
Our Base Camp, located in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, is where we start exploring our region’s past. Our camp focuses on hands-on educational activities that are STEM integrated, where campers work side-by-side with professional archaeologists in the field and in the lab. Campers also learn to identify and cultivate native plants, visit other archaeological sites, hike local archaeological sites that demonstrate the concept of place, participate in experimental archaeology (like learning to use an atlatl and make pottery), learn about anthropology, and create their own research plans with a presentation to the public (ARI staff and field school students) at the end of the week.
Participants leave with an understanding of the career of archaeology and what archaeologists can learn from excavations, an appreciation of Native people’s history and place in society today, and the importance of preserving archaeological sites and natural resources.
How to Prepare & What to Bring: Wear clothes they can get dirty – long pants are recommended. Closed-toe shoes are required – sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Water bottle, snacks, small backpack with sunscreen, bug spray, light weight raincoat.
